Students Capture "Rookie Award" in Future City Competition
Posted: 2/25/03
By Colin Harris, Eighth Grade*editor's note: our students finished 6th out of 39 entries for their first competition ever. Well Done!
In regards to the Future City Competition, the experience was great. Our team consisted of Nate Zeigler, David Casey, and Colin Harris. We had to build a city on the Sim City computer program, write an essay about solving pollution using bioengineering and biotechnology, build a model of our city,
and prepare a presentation. We traveled on Saturday, Jan. 25th to the competition at COSI in Columbus, where we were able to see other teams’ models. We were recognized as the 2003 Rookie of the Year- an award given to the team that scored the highest but whose school had never been to the competition before. Future City gave us a great chance to learn about engineering, pollution, finances, and all the other complex systems involved in running a city. It really taught us that there is so much more to a city than what meets the eye. We would like to thank our teacher Mrs. Joan Jeunnette and our team engineer Mr. Michael Casey for all their hard work in helping us get this project done. They had countless after-school meetings with us, and helped us immensely. We also would like to thank Mrs. Joanne Casey for her wonderful hospitality andng her home as a place for us to work.
We wish next year’s team success, and hope they will have a great time.
