Elyria-- Cornerstone Christian defeatedDoor last night, 57-55, overcoming a 27 point effort by Tori Davis.Door (11-5) took its biggest lead of the game when Aaron Freeman hit a driving layup with 2 minutes, 39 seconds left in the the third quarter to stretch the lead to 40-26.
Visiting Cornerstone (14-1)got back in it when Sam Liggins hit a 3-pointer and added a driving layup to spark a 7-0 run that cut the lead back to 40-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Cornerstoned the fourth quarter with a 21-8 run that gave it a 54-48 lead with 51 seconds left in the game. John Liggins, John Rhoden and Luke Fitzgerald each made two buckets in the surge, while Davis countered with three buckets forDoor.
Door edged closer on buckets by Mike Asbury and Jared Freeman, and when Davis added a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left the lead was down to 56-54. Three seconds later, Tony Madalone forced a Cornerstone turnover, but his layin try in heavy traffic slid off the rim.
WithDoor in the double bonus with 10 fouls, Cornerstone's John Liggins got two tries from the charity stripe with 11 seconds left, but he hit only one to give Cornerstone a 57-54 lead.
After a timeout to set the play,Door got Davis a good look for a 3-pointer to tie, but the shot slid off the iron. Brent Schmitt picked up the rebound and was fouled givingDoor one more chance.
To tie, Schmitt needed to make the first free throw (he did), and needed to miss the second intentionally to giveDoor a quick chance for a rebound and putback.
The rebound went to Cornerstone to end the threat.
"We knew it was going to be tough," saidDoor coach Alan Januzzi. "I'm happy for them (Cornerstone Coach Ronald Calhoun is) starting to build his program. It was a good test. They are where we were two years ago."
"Their big guys played very well. They got a lot of offensive rebounds."
"I got a couple more gray hairs from the game," Calhoun joked. "They got intimidated in the second quarter, but got more aggresive in the third quarter. That Davis is a great player. He scores, he's on the boards and he plays solid defense."
Davis' 27 points leave him one point shy of the school record of 1,106, held by Matt Wireman.
Cornerstone had Sam Liggins (14), Rhoden (14), and John Liggins (11) all reach double figures.
